Maintenance of highway structures

This section provides information about the highway structures managed by us and the inspection programme completed during 2025 to 2026.

Highway structures

We are responsible for 1,447 highway structures.

Of these, 27 structures had interim measures applied in accordance with CS470.

During 2025 to 2026:

• 470 structures were due a General Inspection in accordance with CS450
• 470 General Inspections were completed
• 21 structures were due a Principal Inspection in accordance with CS450
• 19 Principal Inspections were carried out

One further inspection was completed in July 2026, while the remaining inspection is scheduled for September 2026 due to access constraints imposed by Network Rail.

We maintain bridges through planned maintenance and repairs when needed. Culverts, retaining walls and cattle grids are inspected using a risk-based approach to help identify maintenance needs, prioritise repairs and plan future investment.
