Hazardous household waste

How to dispose of household chemicals, asbestos and clinical waste.

We don’t take hazardous waste in your normal bin collection. This includes:

  • chemicals such as brake fluid or print toner
  • batteries
  • solvents
  • pesticides
  • oils (except edible ones) such as car oil
  • hazardous waste containers
  • asbestos

Asbestos

Our Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) accept some hazardous household waste including household chemicals and small amounts of asbestos.

Before you make your visit, call the Household Waste Recycling Centre.

They will need to check they have space for your asbestos waste.

The maximum that will be accepted on any day is four sheets, or equivalent, with a maximum of three visits.

Asbestos must be:

  • in lengths of less than six feet
  • double wrapped in plastic and sealed with tape before visiting the site
  • staff must be informed on arrival

Do not:

  • put the sheets or bags in a skip or just leave them
  • break up asbestos sheets as this is dangerous

Removal licences

Read the Health and Safety Executive's advice on the safe removal of asbestos related products and removal licences.

Clinical waste

Clinical waste is any waste which poses a threat of infection to humans.

Drugs or other pharmaceutical products should be returned to your doctor or pharmacist for safe disposal.

Needles, syringes, scalpels and other blades must be arranged for collection via your doctor. Make sure they are sealed in a container and returned to the supplier.
