Terms and conditions for bulky waste collection

What you need to do when arranging collection for bulky items such as sofas, mattresses, TV's and fridge freezers.

Booking a bulky waste collection

Bulky waste items such as sofa, mattress, tv, fridge freezer, can be removed from outside of your property for a fee.

Book a bulky waste collection by:

Consideration should firstly be given as to whether the item can be reused by someone else instead of it going to landfill.  There are numerous charities that will take furniture and electrical items and provides an affordable alternate for low-income households.  This option should be explored before contacting the council to book a bulky waste collection.

What we will collect

We will collect up to three household items for a fixed price. If between four and six items are required to be collected, an additional charge per item will be applied.  Payment must be made at the time of booking.

We will only collect household items, for example, furniture, carpets, electrical appliances. Please refer to the list of acceptable and unacceptable items. If you are unsure, please contact us before booking.  Items that can be separated will be classed as two separate items; for example, a corner sofa that can be taken apart or a bed base and mattress.

What we won't collect

Any broken-down items will not be taken if they contain nails or other sharp pieces as they could cause injury to operatives on collection.  No foam or padding material should be exposed on sofas. Examples of repairs can include sealing damage with tape, covering damage with plastic, or bagging damaged items.

Collection point

Please state the collection point when booking.  This can either be front of property (on or as close to kerbside as possible) or back lane if your property receives a back lane collection for refuse (as long as not blocking access).  All items must be accessible as the crews cannot lift items over fences or walls.  You must also state if there are animals loose on the property and will be advised to secure them on the agreed date of collection.  Where possible, soft furnishings should be kept dry to avoid them becoming wet and heavy, and only placed out the day before collection.

Collection dates

You will be provided with a list of the next available collection dates for your area to choose from.  If you forget to place the items out, or place them out in the wrong location, or you haven't placed them out in time, you will be recharged if you wish to rebook the collection.

Adding and paying for additional items or amending an item, must be done at least 24 hours (one working day) prior to the scheduled collection.

Cancelling or amending a collection

Cancelling a collection or amending the date of a collection, must be done at least 48 hours (two working days) prior to the scheduled collection to allow time to re-fill the slot.  No refund will be given if the collection is cancelled within this timeframe.

Preparing for collection

No collections will be made from inside the property, including garages and sheds.

Scheduled item(s) for collection must be at the agreed collection point by 7am on the day of collection and no sooner than the day before.

Collection points must be easily accessible.  This can either be front of property (on or as close to kerbside as possible) or back lane if your property receives a back lane collection for refuse (as long as not blocking access).  All items must be accessible as the crew will not lift items over fences or walls and will not be held responsible for any damage whilst on the property.

Items such as carpets should be rolled, carpet off-cuts bagged and broken items securely wrapped and bundled together to avoid injury to the crew.  Glass from tables and internal doors must be securely wrapped to contain any potential breakages.

Items for collection should not be filled with other rubbish, and fridges and freezers should be emptied otherwise they will not be removed.

If you are arranging a Waste Upholstered Domestic Seating (WUDS) bulky waste collection, for example - sofa, any damage to the upholstered seating must be suitably and securely repaired or sealed before your collection and protected from any wet weather to reduce the weight and no foam or padding material should be exposed.  Examples of repairs can include sealing damage with tape, covering damage with plastic, or bagging damaged items.

The Bulky Waste crews are a two-person crew and so any items placed out for collection must be manageable for two people.  Individual capability and a crew decision will be made regarding if an item is manageable.

Collection – what the crew will do

On arrival the crew will carry out a dynamic risk assessment to assess whether terms and conditions are met and if it is safe for the collection to take place.

If the collection cannot be made on the day due to no fault of the council, a photograph will be taken by the crew and a card will be left for you advising what to do next and why the items were not collected, for example:

  • items too heavy
  • items too large
  • items not out
  • items not accessible
  • additional items out.

If this occurs a refund will not be given but a re-collection date can be organised, at a cost, including the amended items, if necessary.

A specific collection day will be given; however, a time of collection cannot be specified.  Collections will take place between 7am and 5pm.

Only the items listed on the booking will be collected – the crew will not collect any additional items presented or any different items to those originally listed. The crew will not move additional items not booked in to enable them to access the items for collection.

We accept no liability for damage to private property as a direct or indirect result of the collection, or from failure of the collection taking place.

Collection – what the crew will not do

The collection crew will not collect items from back gardens, garages, garden sheds, inside the property or anywhere they deem as a health and safety risk, for example - lifting over walls and fences, where there are dog(s) in garden or yard.

The collection crew will not dismantle furniture, disconnect cookers, remove loose waste, take items not booked on their collection list.

If the collection crew considers that the removal of the scheduled items to be unsafe or may cause damage to the property or surroundings, they may refuse to collect the items.  In this instant, a photograph will be taken by the crew and a card will be left for the customer advising what to do next and why the items weren’t collected.  No refund will be given but a re-collection can be organised, if an alternative, safer, collection point can be agreed. This may incur an additional charge.

We do not collect from commercial properties.  Businesses should make their own arrangements with a registered waste carrier.
