Abandoned vehicles

Check or report a vehicle that you think may be abandoned.

Vehicles are likely to be considered abandoned, if at least one of the following applies:

  • it has no road tax - check if a vehicle is taxed on GOV.UK
  • it's not moved for a long period of time
  • it's severely damaged such as flat tyres, missing wheels, broken windows
  • it's burnt out
  • a number plate is missing

This also includes vehicles on private land and roads.

Abandoned vehicles do not include vehicles that:

  • have been involved in a road traffic accident
  • have broken down
  • are causing an obstruction

You will need to report the following to DVLA, if you think a vehicle:

  • is not taxed
  • does not have a valid MOT
  • is not registered as off the road (SORN)

What we will do

Your name, address and contact details will be kept confidential.

Details about the vehicle will be communicated to the DVLA and other relevant statutory agencies.

A vehicle that is considered abandoned will be given a 7-day notice if it is on a public road or a 15 day notice if it is on private land.

In some cases, a vehicle can be removed from public land without notice.
