Choose Cumberland

The Cumberland area welcomes ambition and sustainable growth.

It is a globally recognised place of innovation and opportunity.

A major clean energy hub for the UK and a sustainable place, with a resilient economy that supports the health and wellbeing of its communities.

Its city of Carlisle and its towns of Cleator Moor, Maryport, Millom and Workington have collectively attracted millions of pounds of government funding for schemes that will provide long lasting benefits for businesses and residents.

Investment in infrastructure has also been secured, including the £225 million Southern Link Road. The new road will connect Junction 42 of the M6 with the A595 at Newby West and is vital for the economic growth of Carlisle and to deliver St Cuthbert’s Garden Village that will deliver 10,000 new homes over the next 30 years and employment opportunities, bringing significant benefits to the city and the wider county.

Of all the sites included in the Government’s Garden Village programme, St Cuthbert’s is by far the largest in terms of its potential capacity. It is amongst the most ambitious development projects being actively progressed with the north of England and is one of the leading projects for meeting the growth ambitions of the Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership and the wider Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal.

Cumberland Council was formed in April 2023 and aims to be ambitious, collaborative, compassionate, empowering, and innovative. Its Cumberland Council Plan sets out its vision and values.

Part of Cumbria, the Cumberland area is in the North West of England. It inspires pride of place, but it is also an area of stark contrast. We are home to some of the world’s most stunning rural and coastal landscapes.

Our economy contains strong agricultural and tourism sectors, but we are also a manufacturing economy that boasts some of the most famous brands in the world. We are an economy of small businesses, but we also host the largest nuclear site in Europe.

We are one of the best places to visit, boasting two world heritage sites, an area of outstanding natural beauty and world class attractions that draw in millions of visitors. We are one of the safest places to live and have some of the lowest cost housing in the country.
