Bankfield Day Services offers a range of therapeutic gardening, woodwork and upcycling activities to individuals of all abilities.
A space to grow, reflect, and connect
Tucked away in the heart of Workington, our large, biodiverse therapeutic garden is a vibrant and welcoming space, lovingly maintained by everyone who attends. It’s more than just a garden - it’s a place to learn, relax, and be part of something meaningful.
A garden for wellbeing
Our sensory and relaxation area offers a peaceful retreat, promoting mental health and wellbeing. Nestled within our beautiful natural surroundings, the Willow structure provides a quiet space for reflection and calm.
Creativity through woodwork and upcycling
We turn discarded items into unique garden art and structures—proving that “one person’s trash is another’s treasure.” These creative projects not only beautify our space but also build confidence and practical skills.
Community collaboration
We’re proud to work alongside Northern Rail and other local organisations, helping to maintain flower beds at several nearby train stations. Our garden also welcomes a variety of volunteer and charity groups, creating a strong sense of community and shared purpose.
A working garden
At the front of our site, you'll find our working garden, where we:
care for lawns
prune, weed, and plant
sow seeds and propagate new plants
nurture young plug plants for our annual plant sale
Open to all
Our gates are always open - whether you're here to lend a hand, enjoy the scenery, or simply take a moment to breathe. Everyone is welcome to experience the beauty and tranquility of our garden.
Activities that inspire
Bankfield offers a wide range of engaging and skill-building activities, where the people we support can:
learn new skills
build on existing strengths
boost health and wellbeing
connect with others and feel part of the community
We also participate in regular fishing sessions nearby and enjoy weekly outings to our local sports stadium for “Bikes for All”, as well as indoor walking football, and bowling at the nearby bowling club - encouraging physical activity and fun in a social setting.
Team spirit
Bankfield proudly participates in our day service football team, ‘Workington Diamond Warriors’, part of the Learning Disability FA League - promoting teamwork, fitness, and fun.
Communication at the heart
Our team is deeply committed to person-centred care. We communicate with each individual in their preferred way and continuously adapt our timetable to reflect their evolving interests and goals. We proudly collaborate with national charities to promote inclusive communication, ensuring everyone has a voice.
