Carlisle’s Teenage Market returns

Teenage Market

With only days to go until Carlisle’s second Teenage Market (Saturday 30 September), young entrepreneurs and performers from across Cumberland are busy crafting, baking, felting and rehearsing in preparation for market day.

Supported by the High Street Taskforce and organised by Cumberland Council, the Teenage Market is a fast-growing nationwide initiative set up by teenage brothers Joe and Tom Barratt in Stockport to transform our town and city centres with the creativity of young people.

The Teenage Market offers young people aged between 8 and 25 years old the opportunity to gain experience of selling their own products and marketing their business.

With 26 stalls selling everything from delicious homemade cakes to prints to beautiful, felted animals to homemade soap there is sure to be something for everyone.

There is also a programme of live music and dance during the day, including performances from Northern Heights and Jordyn Louise Dance Schools as well as young local singers and bands.

For some of the young traders and performers this will be their second Teenage Market, having participated in the first market which was held in the city centre in April 2023.

Katie Sharman’s daughter Effie will be attending the market for the second time with her business Silky Moon Stickers, Katie said:

“We are attending the Teenage Market again because we had such a great time at the last one. The organisers did a great job so that the whole day was a pleasure. It's a fantastic opportunity for the young, talented entrepreneurs.”

Live music and performance are a key element of this unique market experience.  Sophie Horseman, Principal of Northern Heights Dance School said:

“The Teenage Market provides an incredible opportunity for our students to showcase their hard work and talent. The chance to perform in front of a crowd is an exhilarating feeling that our students thrive off. The Teenage Market creates memories that our dancers will cherish for a long time as well as being a fantastic platform for teenagers to share their passions and interests.”

Councillor Anne Quilter, Cumberland Council’s Executive Member for Vibrant and Healthy Places added:

“Please come along and support our young entrepreneurs and performers at Carlisle’s second Teenage Market. Our young stall holders and performers have been working exceptionally hard preparing for this event and I know that the talent and creativity on show will be exceptionally high. Good luck to all those taking part.”

Support local young traders and performers by visiting the Carlisle Teenage Market at the Market Square, Carlisle city centre on Saturday 30 September, between 10.30am and 3.30pm.
