With works on the Carlisle Southern Link Road (CSLR) project now well underway, elected members and senior council officials from Cumberland Council and Galliford Try Infrastructure have visited site to see for themselves the progress being made.

Most recently, Cllr Denise Rollo, Cumberland Council’s Executive Member for Sustainable, Resilient and Connected Places and Darren Crossley, Cumberland Council’s Executive Director for Place, Sustainable Growth and Transport visited the CSLR project office, where Cumberland Council, Galliford Try Infrastructure, and other contractors from the supply chain work collaboratively in one space. They were provided with a progress update, completed site safety training, and had a tour of the site.

Cllr Denise Rollo said:

“It was fantastic to see the progress being made on the Carlisle Southern Link Road. This is the single biggest infrastructure project ever undertaken by any Local Authority in the area and it will play a vital role in the future of our local economy.

“The new road will unlock economic inclusive growth in Carlisle through the creation of jobs, attracting businesses to invest, reducing congestion, and creating the infrastructure to support the building of quality homes and community facilities.”

Major developments in recent weeks include the installation of a new 124 tonne temporary bridge over the River Caldew. The temporary bridge will provide access to a work area between the railway and the river. This vital temporary link enables the team to work on the much larger and permanent 'Caldew Crossing' structure.

As well as progressing with the work, Cumberland Council and Galliford Try Infrastructure are also bringing significant benefits to our local communities and charities through a series of works-in-kind, gifts and donations, educational visits, and skills development opportunities. Various groups to have benefited from this such as Eden Valley Hospice, Carlisle Job Centre, and Inspira.

Cllr Denise Rollo added:

“We understand construction can be a disruptive process, and we fully appreciate the patience of our local communities during our ongoing works. Ensuring the project impacts positively on residents and provides a meaningful legacy is hugely important to us and I am pleased to report we are progressing as successfully with these projects as we are with construction.”
