Gritters get a summer run out

A gritter spreading grit

Cumberland Council is informing residents not to worry if they see a gritter out and about during the next week.

Cumberland Council's fleet of gritters will be a familiar sight during the colder months, working tirelessly to keep the roads clear of snow and ice. However, as the council gears up for another winter season, the Highways teams are currently in the process of planning their winter routes.

To ensure that the routes are fully optimised, it is necessary for the Highways teams to conduct thorough testing. This testing will help identify any potential issues or challenges that may arise during the winter season, allowing the council to make any necessary adjustments to their routes in advance.

The gritters will be leaving depots from Lillyhall, Dalston and Brampton, starting on Thursday (22 June) for a week.

Cumberland Council is set to launch its 'winter ready' campaign in October 2023, which will run until April 2024.

A wide range of information about all things winter related will be on the Cumberland Council’s webpage later this year, and will ensure people have the right information, advice, and guidance at their fingertips.

Councillor Denise Rollo, Cumberland Council’s Executive Portfolio Holder for Sustainable, Resilient and Connected Places, said:

“I am pleased that our Highways teams are testing the routes in preparation for winter.  If anyone sees a gritter on the roads, please don’t be concerned, they are ensuring we are ready for winter to give the best possible service to our community.”
