Outdoor learning sessions, support for older people, a community radio station and a technology event all received funding from Petteril Community Panel this week.

The panel, which funds grass roots projects in specific wards, is part of Cumberland Council. With guidance from residents and a network of local partners, it directs funds and investment where it is needed most.

At the panel meeting on Monday, the following projects received support:

Eden Rivers Trust – £5,516

‘Go with the Flow’ provides outdoor learning sessions and community activities in all five of the panel’s wards.

Age UK Carlisle and Eden - £5,000

The money will go towards a new scheme offering shopping and other services to older people, helping them remain independent in their homes for longer.

Carlisle Radio FM - £3,750

A new community radio station providing truly local content, useful news and entertainment for communities in and around Carlisle.

Rotary Club of Carlisle - £300

This will help support a Technology Tournament for young people in Carlisle, encouraging achievement in science.

At the meeting, the panel also formally agreed that, after consultation with the community, their investment priorities should be:

  • Children and young people
  • Emotional wellbeing and mental health
  • The environment

Petteril Community Panel Chairman, Cllr Cyril Weber, said: “I am delighted we have made the first investments from this new community panel. All of them are fantastic grass roots projects that will make a tangible difference. I am really looking forward to seeing them all take shape.”

Cllr Lisa Brown, Cumberland Council Deputy Leader and also Vice-chair of Petteril Community Panel, added: “This is great news for the organisations involved, and it shows how we are investing in the things our community asked us to.

“These projects all support one or more of our three priorities. It’s testament to the nature of community panels – we asked people to tell us what was needed, and now we are acting on that and investing in projects that back that up.

“Community panels are a new way of working and I think they are already bearing fruit.”

Petteril Community Panel covers the wards of  Botcherby, Currock, Harraby South, Harraby North and Upperby. The application deadline for the next round of Community Panel support for Petteril is 25 January. Find out more here: Petteril | Cumberland Council
