Almost £15,000 has been invested into community projects in South Cumberland.

The South Cumberland Community Panel met recently to back a range of initiatives.

  • £1,089 was given to Mind In Furness to provide creative arts activities for the Safe Space project in Millom.
  • £12,500 was awarded to Haverigg Inshore Rescue to fund training and equipment.
  • Members also noted £1,300 of support to the Growing Well gardening initiative in Egremont. This will provide new kitchen equipment.

The panel - part of Cumberland Council – also formally adopted its four priorities, agreed through consultation with the community.

They are:

  • Improving health and wellbeing
  • Accessibility and connectivity
  • Supporting children, families and young people
  • Improving the local living environment

Cllr Linda Jones-Bulman, Chair of the South Cumberland Community Panel, said: “I am really looking forward to seeing how these investments progress.

“These are great projects which support our priorities and provide a service for residents. It is wonderful to be able to use panel funding to empower communities, helping them meet their own needs.”

Cllr Lisa Brown, Cumberland Council Deputy Leader, said: “This is community-led investment in action, and we hope to do more and more of it.

“The Community Panel model allows us to respond to local need and work with residents to see where our investment and support can be of greatest value.”

The South Cumberland Community Panel covers the wards of Gosforth, Millom, Millom Without, Cleator Moor East and Frizington, Cleator Moor West and Egremont.

The application deadline for the next round of Community Panel support for the South Cumberland area is 7 February. Find out more here: South Cumberland | Cumberland Council
