Work on the Carlisle Southern Link Road (CSLR) has continued to progress during a difficult month that has been disrupted by some challenging weather. As we move towards the final stages of construction for this major infrastructure project, the cold temperatures and wet conditions are causing delays.
Key Progress in November
- Caldew Crossing: The locally sourced sandstone work is complete, so the scaffolding on the Caldew Crossing has come down revealing unobstructed views of the structure for the first time. You can see the progress made and the new bridge from the Cummersdale to Caldew path.
- Active Travel Enhancements: Significant progress has been made on the installation of shared-use paths and green corridors. Over 14 km of high-quality paths for walking, wheeling, and cycling, which will result in a continuous route between Cummersdale and Carleton. These improvements will make everyday journeys safer and greener for local communities.
- Lighting and Connectivity: The new 8 km shared-use path is fully lit along most of the route, apart from the Caldew Crossing section (unlit for environmental reasons). It connects with existing popular routes such as Dalston to Carlisle and Wreay Woods, creating a much-improved network for leisure and commuting.
Upcoming Works
- M6 J42 and A6: Work on the slip road around the junction and onto the A6 are ongoing to create a dedicated left turn lane off the motorway onto the CSLR. The A6 is being reduced from the current two lanes to one to make space for the shared use path and a reduction in traffic into the city center.
- Ivegill Road and Scalegate Road: Work continues sections near Ivegill Road and Brisco, with overnight and weekend closures scheduled for surfacing and landscaping. Please allow extra time for journeys and follow signed diversion routes.
- A595 Kingrigg: The new access for Kingrigg Farm is underway and will require some overnight traffic lights and may require some short duration night-time closures to complete.
