Carlisle Southern Link Road Project Update – October 2025

CSLR - october 2025

Work on the Carlisle Southern Link Road (CSLR) continues to progress at pace as we move closer to the completion of this infrastructure project for Carlisle and the wider region.

Key Achievements for October:

  • Newby West to Cummersdale Section Opened (20 October): A brand-new section of the CSLR between Newby West Roundabout and Cummersdale Roundabout opened to traffic at 5:00am on 20 October. This replaces the old route via Peter Lane, which is now permanently closed at the Newby West end. Access from Dalston Road remains for residents and landowners.
  • Brisco to Red Cat Roundabout Section Opened (24 October): Another major milestone saw the opening of the section between Brisco Roundabout and Red Cat Roundabout, improving connectivity and reducing congestion. Brisco Crossroads will remain closed for approximately two weeks, with access maintained via Carlisle and the new link road.

Upcoming and Ongoing Road Closures:

Ivegill Road Drainage Works:
Essential drainage works will take place during half-term (25 October – 2 November), requiring full closure of Ivegill Road between Durdar and Stoneraise School. Additional overnight and weekend closures will follow into early November for surfacing and landscaping. Access to Stoneraise School will remain open throughout. The full series of works at Ivegill Road is as follows:

  • 25 October to 2 November (Half Term) - During half-term, Ivegill Road will close. This will allow the Contractor to undertake the remaining drainage work that crosses the existing carriageway which cannot be completed without more than an overnight or weekend road closure.
  • 3 November – 7 November - During the day, Ivegill Road will be open to traffic (07:00 - 19:00), however traffic lights will be in place so please allow a few minutes extra for your journey. During the night (19:00 - 07:00), Ivegill Road will close to complete the drainage works that require short overnight closures.
  • 8 November – 9 November (Weekend) - Over the weekend, Ivegill Road will close to install the remaining fencing.
  • 10 November – 14 November - During the day, Ivegill Road will be open to traffic (07:00 - 19:00), however traffic lights will be in place so please allow a few minutes extra for your journey. During the night (19:00 - 07:00), Ivegill Road will close to complete the surfacing of the road and the shared use path.
  • 15 November – 16 November (Weekend) - Over the weekend, Ivegill Road will close to complete the earthworks and landscaping.

Please note that the schedule may change depending on the weather, especially for drainage and surfacing works which are affected by rain and temperature. Any extra closures needed will be shared as soon as they’re confirmed.

Newbiggin Road Closure:
Continues until 7 November 2025 between Brisco Road/Wreay Road and M6 J42. Diversions remain in place via Durdar Road, Blackwell Road, St Nicholas, and London Road.

Supporting our communities

Dalston Scout Group

Dalston Scout Group has been awarded funding from the CSLR Trust, part of the Carlisle Southern Link Road project delivered by Galliford Try Infrastructure.

This funding has already opened up exciting new opportunities for local young people. The group, which has been running for over 50 years and now engages more than 75 Beavers, Cubs and Scouts aged 6–15, helps young people develop confidence, communication, teamwork and leadership through fun and adventure.

Thanks to the CSLR Trust grant, the group has been able to invest in:

  • Ten stand-up paddleboards for young people
  • Two paddleboards for instructors
  • One super-sized paddleboard
  • Brand new safety gear, including buoyancy aids
  • Training for five adult volunteers, who are now qualified Stand Up Paddleboard instructors

Previously, water-based activities were limited to just eight young people at a time. Now, up to 40 can get on the water together — creating more opportunities to enjoy paddleboarding and build new skills.

The highlight of this investment came during Dalston Scout Group's summer camp at Bassenthwaite Lake, where even the most apprehensive young people were soon smiling, laughing and joining in with enthusiasm.

Dalston Scout Group leaders described the funding as transformative:

"This generous grant has allowed us to expand the range of activities we can offer our young people. Seeing the young people happy, laughing and learning new skills on the water has been truly rewarding. We are incredibly grateful to the CSLR Trust and Galliford Try for making this possible."

Cumberland Council is proud to support Dalston Scout Group as they continue to inspire, empower and create opportunities for young people across our community.
