An investment of almost £65,000 will enable three community centres to continue their vital work.

The funding, from Border, Fellside and North Carlisle Community Panel, will allow the venues to continue hosting local groups, activities and community events.

  • Longtown Memorial Hall Community Centre was awarded a total of £29,200 to continue to employ two part-time staff. The money will also fund furniture for the centre's newly established social community hub.
  • Brampton and Beyond Community Trust received £21,400 towards staffing costs at the village's community centre.
  • Belah Community Centre was awarded a total of £14,100 for staffing costs.

The Chair of Border, Fellside and North Carlisle Community Panel, Cllr Roger Dobson, said:

"One of the panel's priorities is 'community facilities and support' and this investment fits that perfectly. It is great to be able to help vital community services like this survive and thrive, and I hope these venues continue their crucial work for a long time to come."

Other investments in the panel's latest funding round were:

  • £4,000 for Sleep Patrol, which provides beds and mattresses for people in need. The items are donated by Sealy UK and this investment will be used to fund delivery, plus new bed linen to accompany each bed.
  • £1,668 toward installing toilets at Rebuild's new workshop at Kingmoor Park, Carlisle. Rebuild takes surplus materials from the construction industry and passes them to community groups for reuse.
  • £994 for Hayton Parish Council to buy a speed indicator device for use in local villages.
  • £1,000 for Wetheral Parish Council to repair playground equipment at Cotehill.

Cumberland Council has eight Community Panels made up of ward councillors and, sometimes, co-opted members.

They aim to engage communities, and involve them in decision making - ensuring investment is focused and effective.

The Border, Fellside and North Carlisle Community Panel covers the wards of Belah, Stanwix Urban, Longtown, Brampton, Houghton and Irthington, Corby and Hayton and Wetheral.

The application deadline for the next round of Community Panel support for the Border, Fellside and North Carlisle area is 21 August. Organisations seeking support should email BFNC@cumberland.gov.uk  for more information, or visit Community Panels | Cumberland Council
