Cumberland Council is delighted to announce progress on the Carlisle Southern Link Road (CSLR) project, as construction of the largest structure on the project reaches a major milestone.
Recently, all 18 steel beams were installed on the bridge completing all the major steelwork required for the new Caldew Crossing.
Funded by Homes England, this transformative infrastructure project will enhance east-to-west connectivity, reduce congestion in Carlisle city centre, and unlock the delivery of St. Cuthbert’s Garden Village.
The centrepiece of the CSLR project is the Caldew Crossing which crosses the River Caldew. This impressive structure which measures 170m in length, 18m in width and 20m high over the River Caldew is a vital part of the council’s commitment to creating sustainable, resilient, and connected places.
Cllr Denise Rollo, Cumberland Council’s Executive Member for Sustainable, Resilient and Connected Places, said:
“This road will change the landscape of Carlisle; the potential that will unveil itself when the road opens in terms of new development opportunities, as well as easing the pressure on the city centre traffic network, is incredibly exciting.
“Completion of this milestone on the construction of the Caldew Crossing is fantastic, and I want to thank the team on the ground for their hard work and effort to get us to this point. This is no small challenge, and I look forward to further updates on its progress as we move towards completion.
“I was incredibly proud to see this work first-hand to thank and meet some of the team who have been working on delivering the structure for many months. As always, this work has been delivered safely and in a collaborative and integrated manner with all partners involved. ”
In addition, Cumberland Council is pleased to confirm that the Cummersdale to Dalston footpath has reopened to the public as normal, further enhancing connectivity for local residents. From the footpath, you can see the new Caldew Crossing and the progress being made in the area.
The Carlisle Southern Link Road is a transformative project that demonstrates Cumberland Council’s commitment to improving transport infrastructure, supporting sustainable development, and driving economic growth. The council will continue to provide updates as the project progresses toward its completion.
