Cumberland Council urges residents to stay safe and buy fireworks responsibly

Only licensed shops are permitted to sell fireworks, and these sellers must follow strict regulations to ensure that all products meet national safety standards.

Buying fireworks from unlicensed sources — including markets, car boot sales, social media or door-to-door sellers — can put you, your family, and your community at serious risk.

Key safety advice for residents:

- Buy safely – Purchase fireworks only from licensed retailers. Look for CE/UKCA marks on the packaging.
- Store securely – Keep fireworks in a closed box, away from sources of heat, and never carry them in your pockets.
- Follow instructions – Always read and follow the safety instructions carefully.
- Think of others – Let neighbours know if you plan to have a display, especially those with pets, young children, or vulnerable residents.
- Be responsible – Never set off fireworks in the street or other public places. It is illegal and dangerous.

Councillor Justin McDermott, Cumberland Council’s Executive Member for Public Health and Communities, said: "Fireworks can be a fun and exciting way to celebrate, but they must be used safely and responsibly. We urge residents to buy only from licensed retailers, follow the safety guidance, and be considerate of others when planning displays."

Trading Standards officers will be carrying out checks across the area to ensure businesses are complying with the law.

Shops selling fireworks without a licence or to anyone under 18 risk prosecution and could face fines.

If you are concerned about the illegal sale of fireworks, please report it to Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 0808 223 1133 or contact Cumberland Council’s Trading Standards team.
