Fresh Look, Safer Spaces: The vision for Hammond’s Pond takes shape

Hammond's Pond MUGA

Cumberland Council’s commitment to improving Hammond’s Pond continues to gather pace, with several exciting updates now moving forward as part of the regeneration scheme.

Following the successful clearance of vegetation earlier this year, debris has now been removed from the Wire Mire Beck to the west of the Blackwell Road culvert, helping to improve water flow and support better water level regulation within the park.

Meanwhile, essential works to improve recreational facilities are set to begin. The Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) will be closed from Tuesday 27 May for a full refurbishment lasting approximately six weeks. The upgrades will include new surfacing, line markings, and replacement of fencing and goals to ensure a safer and more enjoyable space for users.

The team has begun design and build process for a brand new concrete skatepark, with the final design expected to reflect the ideas gathered through community consultation events held in recent months.

Work on the play areas is progressing in stages. In the junior section, the existing bark surface will be replaced with wet pour rubber by August, improving accessibility and safety. Meanwhile, the infant area, is scheduled to receive new inclusive new play equipment in autumn 2025.

In line with promoting active travel, design work is ongoing for a new cycle shelter and repair point, which the council will be updating residents on in due course.

Funded through the Carlisle Town Deal, the improvements at Hammond’s Pond form a key part of the wider Start with the Park initiative—a programme designed to enhance the quality, safety, and accessibility of green spaces across Carlisle. This initiative is part of the council’s £100 million regeneration programme for the city, supported by UK Government funding through the Future High Streets Fund, Town Deal, and Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal.

In addition to the ongoing improvement works, residents can look forward to a day of celebration and family fun at the Upperby Gala, taking place on Bank Holiday Monday 26 May, from 1pm to 4pm, at Hammond’s Pond. The event will include live performances, children’s entertainers, animal encounters, interactive forest skills tasters, and a fun fair. Visitors will also connect with local services, including Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service and Cumbria Police, who will be joined by other community organisations. The gala is a fantastic opportunity for the community to come together and enjoy everything the park has to offer.
