Gliding geese connect past and present in community art installation

Lowther Arcade

Cumberland Council are excited to showcase a vibrant new mural inside the iconic Lowther Arcade.

The transformation is now complete at the heart of Carlisle, with the unveiling of a bold new mural. The artwork was designed and painted by Woskerski, a renowned street artist, and features imagery of flying geese—symbolising movement, unity, and transformation.

The mural has been delivered in collaboration with Blank Wall Assassins, a non-profit organisation celebrated for injecting creativity and life into urban spaces. Located within the historic 1904 Grade II listed Lowther Arcade, which links Lowther Street to English Street, this colourful artwork brings fresh energy to one of the city’s most iconic spaces.

The installation forms part of the wider regeneration of English Street, delivered through the Carlisle Southern Gateway project, which forms part of the council’s £100 million regeneration programme for Carlisle, supported by UK Government funding through the Future High Streets Fund, Town Deal and Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal initiative.

This multi-million-pound investment is focused on transforming the city centre by improving infrastructure, boosting economic growth, and creating a more attractive, accessible environment for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.

This striking mural reflects the exciting evolution of Carlisle — a city where artistic innovation and historic character go hand in hand. Backed by significant investment, the Carlisle Southern Gateway is reshaping the city centre, building a more dynamic, welcoming space for everyone to enjoy.

Cumberland Councillor Anne Quilter, Executive Member for Vibrant and Healthy Places said:

"This mural is a fantastic example of how we are breathing new life into Carlisle’s historic spaces. Lowther Arcade has always been a cherished part of our city’s heritage, and this artwork brings a modern energy that celebrates both our past and our future. Through the Carlisle Southern Gateway project, we are committed to creating a city centre that’s inspiring, inclusive, and full of pride."
