Greenmarket and Market Square Reopening Celebration - Lights, Music, Markets

Images of the teams who made this project a success

Carlisle city centre buzzed with energy last Saturday (18 October) as Cumberland Council celebrated the grand reopening of Market Square and Greenmarket, following a transformative regeneration project funded by the Government’s Future High Streets Fund.

The £5.5 million investment revitalised over 5,000 square metres, turning the heart of the city into a vibrant, multifunctional space designed to support local businesses, boost footfall, and create a welcoming environment for residents and visitors alike. The improvements include new paving, stylish street furniture, feature lighting, and natural stone elements. Greenmarket now proudly serves as a dedicated event space.

This milestone is part of a wider vision, with over £100 million invested in high-quality schemes aimed at reshaping Carlisle into a greener, more dynamic and accessible city centre, one that’s truly fit for the future.

The celebration kicked off with speeches from Councillor Mark Fryer, Leader of Cumberland Council, and Councillor Andy Semple, Chair of Cumberland Council. They were joined by Councillor Anne Quilter and the Mayor of Carlisle, Councillor Jeanette Whalen, in marking this exciting new chapter.

Councillor Mark Fryer, Leader of Cumberland Council, shared his enthusiasm:

“This was a fantastic moment for Carlisle. The new-look Market Square and Greenmarket came alive with music from the Border Brass Band, talented local performers, and the incredible Mr Wilson’s Second Liners.

“This space is now a place to meet, shop, relax, and enjoy events all year round. We are proud of what we have achieved and thrilled to see the community embracing it.

“I want to extend my thanks to all the Cumberland Council staff and contractors who made this project possible. From the teams who worked tirelessly to transform the space, to those who ensured everything was presentable and welcoming on the day, and to everyone who helped pull this fantastic event together; your dedication and teamwork truly brought this celebration to life.”

Councillor Anne Quilter, Executive Member for Vibrant & Healthy Places, added:

“We were proud to be part of this celebration in the heart of Carlisle. The space was fully utilised, from the bustling market to the live performances and the Rolling Pub Company keeping everyone refreshed.

“We’ve received fantastic feedback from the community, and it’s wonderful to see support for local traders and businesses. Don’t forget, open-air markets continue every Friday, and the Quirky Eclectica Market returns every third Saturday of the month.”

The event marked a new beginning for Carlisle’s city centre, with the redesigned space now ready to host markets, festivals, and community gatherings for years to come.
