Cumberland Council is reassuring residents not to be concerned if they spot gritters out on the roads over the coming week; it’s all part of preparations to ensure the council is ready for winter.
While gritters are a familiar sight during the colder months, helping to keep roads clear of snow and ice, Cumberland Council’s Highways teams are currently using the summer period to train new staff and test equipment ahead of the winter season.
These pre-season checks are essential. They allow the teams to familiarise new drivers with the vehicles and routes, while also identifying any issues that need to be resolved before temperatures drop.
Gritters will be operating from our Lillyhall Depot in Workington and the Dalston Depot near Carlisle, throughout this week and next as part of this proactive planning process.
Cumberland Council will officially launch its 'Winter Ready' campaign in October 2025, running through to April 2026. The campaign will provide a wide range of helpful information, advice, and resources via the council’s website to ensure residents are well-prepared and supported during the winter months.
Cumberland Councillor Denise Rollo, Executive Member for Sustainable, Resilient and Connected Places, said:
“It might seem strange to see a gritter on the roads during one of the hottest weeks on record in Cumberland last week; but rest assured, there was a good reason!
“These test runs are crucial for ensuring our teams are fully trained and our equipment is in top condition before the winter season hits. By preparing now, we can be confident in delivering the best possible service when it's needed most.
“If you see a gritter out and about, there’s no need for concern, it just means we’re getting winter ready.”
