Cumberland Council is gearing up to deliver major improvements on the A66 at Ramsay Brow, a key part of the exciting Workington Gateway project.

The council has been awarded £10.02 million from central government to boost connections to key employment sites and the Port of Workington, while also improving walking and cycling links between the town centre and Workington’s cultural and heritage attractions.

The Workington Gateway project is a key part of the Town Investment Plan, improving infrastructure to support growth in manufacturing, logistics and clean energy. It will also complement investment at the Port of Workington, creating jobs and strengthening the town’s role in the government’s clean growth and maritime agenda.

As part of the project, Hall Park will see new activities and attractions introduced, along with better walking and cycling access. These improvements will make Hall Park and Workington Hall easier to visit on foot or by bike, encouraging healthier lifestyles and a stronger connection with local heritage.

Highway improvements at Ramsay Brow and Hall Brow will help ease traffic congestion and support smoother journeys through the town.

This work forms part of a wider programme of regeneration, with over £33 million of central government investment secured for Workington to drive economic development and create a more connected, vibrant town.

Cllr Denise Rollo, Executive Member for Sustainable, Resilient and Connected Places, said:

“The improvements at Ramsay Brow mark an exciting step forward for Workington. By reducing congestion and creating better walking and cycling links, we’re not only making everyday journeys easier but also opening up access to jobs, culture, and heritage.

“Together with wider investment through the Workington Gateway project, this work will help create a greener, healthier and more connected town that’s ready to grow and thrive.”
