Cumberland Council will commence its annual cattle grid replacement programme this November, beginning with essential works at the Hardknott cattle grid near Cockley Beck.
The works are scheduled to take place from Monday 3 November to Friday 14 November 2025, subject to weather and site conditions.
To ensure the safety of both the workforce and the public, a full road closure will be in place 24 hours a day for the duration of the works. A signed diversion route, supported by bespoke signage, will guide road users around the closure.
While access for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will be maintained at all times, the closure at the cattle grid will effectively close Hardknott Pass as a through route during this period.
Residents, businesses, and road users are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra time for journeys.
Cumberland Councillor Denise Rollo, Executive Member for Sustainable, Resilient and Connected Places, said:
“We would like to thank all visitors and residents for their patience and understanding while these essential works are carried out. We are working closely with local farmers to ensure they can continue to access their livestock throughout the closure.
“While this work may cause some short-term disruption, the upgraded cattle grid will bring long-term benefits for farmers, cattle, and all who travel through this area. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation as we make these important improvements.”
