The Port of Workington – owned and operated by Cumberland Council – has been shortlisted twice at the upcoming British Port Association (BPA) Awards.
The prestigious awards celebrate excellence, innovation, sustainability, and outstanding leadership across the UK ports sector.
The Port of Workington has been shortlisted for the SME Port of the Year award, which recognises small and medium sized port enterprises who have demonstrated excellence in an area of port management such as operational efficiency, stakeholder engagement, development or user/customer relations.
It is also in the running for the Port Development Award, which is to be given in recognition of achievements in the planning, design, construction, and execution of a development or project. This highlights initiatives and schemes that have built new infrastructure, enhanced port estates, capacity, and efficiency, driving port activity and economic growth.
The port is a key asset for the council and local area with significant potential to unlock economic growth in the region. To date, more than £25 million has been invested by the Government and council in activities directly related to the port, improving things such as infrastructure, road access and warehouse capabilities.
Barbara Cannon, the council’s Executive member for financial planning and assets, said: “This is wonderful news and a real testament to the team at the port and those who support them for their hard work, energy and ambition. The port is a key piece of infrastructure for Cumberland and we have a strong vision to further expand the port into a bustling hub for energy production, manufacturing and logistics industries.”
The winners will be revealed at the BPA Conference Gala Dinner later this month.
