Cumberland Council is pleased to announce the successful completion of a major milestone in the heart of Whitehaven.

On Friday 13 June, the newly refurbished Green Market and Duke Street in Whitehaven were officially opened and celebrated by residents, visitors, and local businesses during a special community event.

This vibrant regeneration formed part of the Public Realm Improvement Plan, representing a £450,000 investment made possible through funding from Sellafield Ltd, the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, and Cumberland Council.

Delivered by local firm Thomas Armstrong (Construction) Ltd over a 13-week programme, the works have breathed new life into these central spaces, making them more attractive, accessible, and welcoming for everyone.

Improvements include stylish new seating, fresh planting, and upgraded litter bins—all designed to boost functionality and appearance. Standout features include the addition of historical interpretation boards, developed to showcase and celebrate the rich heritage of Green Market and the Market Hall, as well as two commemorative stones created by the Whitehaven Heritage Action Group.

Designed by Align Property Partners, the scheme struck a careful balance between modern usability and historical preservation. By elevating the public realm, the project aims to increase footfall, support local trade, and honour Whitehaven’s cultural and historical legacy.

To mark the occasion, Cumberland Council hosted a community celebration on Friday 13 June at the Green Market. Attendees enjoyed live music performed by Char, an acoustic pop artist from Cockermouth, and had the opportunity to explore the newly transformed area.

Leader of Cumberland Council, Councillor Mark Fryer, said:

“This was an exciting step forward for Whitehaven. By enhancing the public realm and preserving the area’s proud history, we have not just invested in infrastructure; we have invested in people, place, and pride.

“The support and enthusiasm shown by the community have been truly inspiring. I would like to thank everyone who came along to celebrate with us, including local residents, businesses, councillors, and our talented performer Char.

“A special thank you also to Cross’s Coffee Shop for providing refreshments—generously paid for by Thomas Armstrong Ltd—it was very much appreciated.

“This event marked a shared achievement for our town, and I am proud of what we have accomplished together.”
