£14.3 million road upgrades – smoother, safer journeys ahead

Cumberland Council is celebrating the success of the extensive road improvement works on the A595 and A5086, marking a significant milestone in upgrading Cumberland’s highways network and infrastructure.

This £14.3 million project, funded through the Government’s Levelling Up Fund, has delivered essential enhancements across 16.5 miles of highway, improving safety and reliability for residents, businesses, and visitors.

The improvement programme, which began in January 2024 and is now largely complete included:

  • 11.05 miles of resurfacing on the A595

  • 6.31 miles resurfaced on the A5086

  • 910 gullies replaced

  • 185 manholes replaced

  • 5,397 kerbs installed

  • 2,493 metres of edgings installed

  • 3,258 road studs installed

  • 64,014 metres of road markings laid

  • 125 streetlights replaced 

In addition to celebrating this major infrastructure milestone, Cumberland Council is proud to recognise the outstanding work of the team behind the Scallows Farm Road Embankment Stabilisation project, which has received a Commendation in the CIHT Resilience Award. This national recognition highlights the team's innovative and resilient engineering solutions that strengthen and futureproof our local road network.

This milestone marks significant progress in Cumberland’s ongoing efforts to enhance transport links, reduce future disruptions, and improve overall road safety.
