Cumberland Council has introduced a clinically proven, drug-free intervention method to help residents quit smoking with ease through its Smokefree Cumberland service.
The Council has introduced Allen Carr’s Easyway method, an innovative approach that combines cognitive behavioural therapy with live group seminars.
The method is endorsed by both the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the World Health Organization (WHO) for its effectiveness in helping smokers quit long-term.
Studies show that the programme can help 1 in 2 smokers quit smoking long-term, with more than 50 million people having successfully used the method globally over the past 40 years.
The programme is available to Cumberland residents looking to kick the habit.
Cumberland residents can easily access the Allen Carr programme through a dedicated link. Simply visit the Allen Carr website.
The programme will be available until all places are filled, so early booking is encouraged to secure your spot.
Residents can also access Allen Carr’s “Easy Way To Stop Smoking” book via the Cumberland Borrowbox service.
Quitting smoking is one of the most impactful decisions you can make for your health and well-being. Over time, quitting reduces the risks of serious illnesses like cancer, heart disease, and strokes.
Beyond physical health, quitting also boosts mental well-being and reduces stress, while saving you thousands of pounds a year.
Cllr Justin McDermott, Cumberland Councillor and Portfolio Holder for Public Health and Communities, said: “Quitting smoking is one of the best things anyone can do for their health. It reduces the risk of serious diseases and helps to ease the strain on our healthcare services.
“The Allen Carr programme has already helped millions of people worldwide quit smoking for good. By offering this proven intervention to our residents, we hope to empower more people in Cumberland to break free from smoking and enjoy a healthier, smoke-free future. I urge all smokers in Cumberland to give it a try.”
Colin Cox, Cumberland Council’s Director of Public Health, Customer and Community Wellbeing: "Smoking is a major cause of preventable diseases like cancer, heart issues, and lung conditions, harming both smokers and those around them.
“Quitting brings immediate and lasting benefits, from improved breathing and energy to a lower risk of serious illnesses. It also boosts mental wellbeing, eases financial stress, and sets a positive example for loved ones.
“I would like to encourage all current smokers in Cumberland to utilise this opportunity to embrace a healthier, smoke-free life”.
CEO of Allen Carr’s Easyway, Paul Baker said: "We are delighted to have been appointed by Cumberland Council to help the smokers of Cumberland.
“We have been helping smokers find freedom for over 40 years and helping an estimated 50 million people worldwide with our clinically proven drug-free method."
