Reminder: Public drop-in session to discuss Workington regeneration plans

Workington

Cumberland Council would like to take this opportunity to invite residents, businesses, and community groups about an upcoming public drop-in session, in Workington.

The session is to share information on the town centre and gateway projects that form part of the £33 million regeneration programme set to transform Workington and its town centre.

The session will take place at:
Workington Library, Vulcans Lane, CA14 2ND
Thursday 24 July, 3pm – 7.30pm

The event will give members of the public the opportunity to view construction plans for the two projects, understand the project timelines, and speak directly with council officers and project leads about what to expect over the coming months.

This major investment programme, supported by £23 million from the Workington Town Deal and a further £10 million from central government Levelling Up Fund, will deliver two flagship schemes:

  • Workington Town Centre Public Realm and Connectivity Project, which will create a safer, more attractive, and pedestrian-friendly town centre.
  • Workington Gateway, which will improve road infrastructure, reduce congestion, and enhance walking and cycling links to key employment and heritage sites, including the Port of Workington and Hall Park.

Construction for both projects is expected to begin in August 2025 and be completed by spring 2026. The programme is part of a wider vision to boost Workington’s economy, improve transport links, and create a more vibrant, accessible town for residents, businesses, and visitors.

Leader of Cumberland Council, Councillor Mark Fryer, said:

“This regeneration programme is a game-changer for Workington and the wider area. With over £33 million of investment, we are delivering real improvements that will benefit our communities for years to come.

“The drop-in session on 24 July is a great opportunity for people to learn more, ask questions, and have their say as we move into the construction phase.”
