Step into learning

Cumbria Adult Learning has launched a new programme of courses for the 2025/26 academic year.

Hosted by Cumberland Council and Westmorland and Furness Council, Cumbria Adult Learning has just published its latest brochure. The wide range of courses could help learners improve their confidence, develop their skills, enhance their CV, meet new people, pick up a new hobby or improve their health and wellbeing.

The new brochure will be landing through letterboxes across Cumbria from this week, and is packed with information about what’s on offer and how people can get involved.

Courses include Building Confidence and Self Esteem with Positive Thinking, Essential Digital Skills, Maths Step Up, Cooking on a Budget, and Introduction to Mindfulness – in addition to a wide range of other subjects inspiring people to achieve their full potential.

There are courses for people at all levels and interests, both accredited/qualification and non-qualification.

The service was recently rated ‘good’ by Ofsted following an inspection in June, with two areas graded ‘outstanding’. This external recognition reflects the quality of teaching, learner support and outcomes that Cumbria Adult Learning continues to deliver. There’s never a better time to take the next step into learning.

In the Ofsted report, 98 per cent of learners said they were satisfied, and 97 per cent said the courses met their expectations.

Courses run in Whitehaven, Workington, Carlisle, Barrow, Penrith, Kendal and the surrounding areas. Learners will be supported throughout the course with guidance from the service’s expert staff.

Many of the courses are free or subsidised, so that learners do not have to spend a penny. And learning is more flexible than ever, with courses delivered both face-to-face and online, so learners can choose the route that is right for them.

Councillor Elaine Lynch, Cumberland Council Executive Member for Lifelong Learning and Development, said:

“Whether you’re looking to boost your digital skills, improve your employability, or take time for your health and wellbeing with our arts and crafts courses, there really is something for everyone with Adult Learning.

“We offer hundreds of classes with flexible times, including online options for those who find it difficult to attend in person. We also have practical courses available to support everyday living, from cooking on a budget to upcycling and managing the rising cost of living.

“Keep an eye out for our new brochure arriving through your door, it’s packed with opportunities and inspiration to help you get started.

“Take a look at what’s on offer and join the thousands of learners who’ve enriched their lives through learning.”

Councillor Janet Battye, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Education and Skills, added:

“We’re excited to launch this academic year’s programme of courses for Cumbria, supporting and inspiring people to grow their skills whether it’s move forward in their career, achieve personal goals or simply learn something new and fun for enjoyment.

“Every year, over 6000 learners choose to learn with us. They tell us how our courses have helped them to develop new skills, explore new hobbies, gain qualifications, advance their career, find a new job, build their confidence, and support their wellbeing.

“Our experienced tutors are here to guide you every step of the way. So, if you’ve been thinking about learning something new or developing your skills, now’s the perfect time. Get in touch and see where learning could take you.”
