As the New Year approaches, Cumberland Council invites individuals to adopt a purposeful resolution for 2026: volunteer as a driver with our Voluntary Social Car Scheme!
Our community-driven transport initiative operates through 16 local schemes across Cumberland, offering essential door-to-door journeys for residents of all ages (under-18s must be accompanied by an adult) who lack other means of transport. Whether it’s a weekly shop, medical appointment, bus connection, or visiting friends, our volunteer drivers make a real difference, with flexibility built right in.
Why volunteer?
- Provide crucial transport services to vulnerable or isolated residents
- Flexible commitment, you drive when it suits you
- Reimbursement of fuel expenses: 45p/mile without a passenger, 50p with passenger(s)
- Insurance coverage, including protection for no-claims bonus and excess
- Join a community-focused team making a positive impact
Joining is easy
- Sign up to volunteer as a driver or coordinator
- Drivers receive contact information for your nearest scheme Coordinator
- Decide how much time you can offer on your own terms
- Help residents reach doctor/dentist appointments, the shops, or their loved ones
Schemes currently operate in areas including: Kirkbride & Bowness-on-Solway, Aspatria, Cockermouth, Keswick, Whitehaven, Millom, Workington, Maryport, Cleator Moor, Drigg & Seascale, Dalston, Ireby, Gosforth, and more.
