An innovative course designed to support unemployed individuals, particularly those managing health conditions, on their journey towards work has been successfully delivered in West Cumbria.
The programme, delivered by Cumberland Council in partnership with Inspira and Cumbria CVS and supported by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), placed a strong emphasis on building resilience, confidence, and motivation through health-focused activities. Participants explored a wide range of themes, including managing stress, developing resilience and emotional intelligence, preparing for interviews, and learning how to communicate health needs to employers. They also discovered the health benefits of volunteering and practical ways to get involved.
As part of the course, Ruth Whitelock, Disability Employment Adviser at DWP, spoke to attendees about Access to Work, a grant that provides vital support for people with health conditions or disabilities in employment. Participants were also given the opportunity to connect with organisations such as West Cumbria Rivers Trust, Ability Net, Hospice at Home, Goodlives Project, and Citizens Advice Copeland, gaining valuable insights into how volunteering opportunities can be both flexible and inclusive for those managing health challenges.
Thanks to the support of Greenwich Leisure Limited (GLL) and Whitehaven Sports Centre, course participants were also able to join the ‘Give it a Go’ programme, a six-week initiative designed to reintroduce physical activity and boost wellbeing.
Feedback from those who took part was overwhelmingly positive. Many reported feeling more confident when talking to employers about their health conditions, while others recognised volunteering as a valuable first step back into the world of work.
Cllr Elaine Lynch, Executive Member for Lifelong Learning and Development said:
“It’s great to see a programme that helps people look after their health and wellbeing while preparing for work. Building confidence and finding ways to get involved in the community can make a real difference, and this course gives people the tools and support to take those first steps”
This initiative forms part of the wider Skills & Enterprise Programme, which helps people improve their health and wellbeing as a vital step towards employment.
