Teen shelter among projects funded

A new place to hang out is a step nearer for St Bees teenagers, thanks to the Whitehaven and Coastal Community Panel.

The panel, which directs Cumberland Council’s community investment to local projects, awarded The Adams Recreation Ground £5,000 towards a teen shelter - something the community had said was a top priority.

Other awards in the latest round of investments from the panel were:

  • £2,394 to Hensingham ARLFC for games and sporting equipment for their younger members.
  • £6,100 to Copeland Age and Advice Service towards refurbishing new premises at Haig Enterprise Park. The property, once converted from a warehouse, will have room to display, test and fit equipment to help people live independently.
  • £7,740 to Cumbria Wildlife Trust towards their People and Pollinator project. This will increase biodiversity by involving communities in creating three pollinator-friendly habitats at sites yet to be determined.
  • £4,000 to Mirehouse Community Centre for their Maximising Income project. It will support vulnerable people through challenges associated with benefits and finances, and will be available out of hours and at the location of the client.

The Chair of Whitehaven and Coastal Community Panel, Cllr Gillian Troughton, said: "We want to see every corner of our communities thrive. These projects cover a range of ages and people, and support the things our residents have told us are important - including addressing inequality, activities for young people, and natural spaces. I am sure they will all play an invaluable part in making life better for our community."

The Whitehaven and Coastal Community Panel covers the wards of Bransty, Egremont North and St Bees, Hillcrest and Hensingham, Howgate, Kells and Sandwith, and Mirehouse.

The application deadline for the next round of Community Panel support for the Whitehaven and Coastal area is 20 August. Organisations looking for support should e-mail whitehavencoastalcp@cumberland.gov.uk for more information or click below
