The Teenage Market heads to Maryport for the first time

After the great success of the Teenage Market in Carlisle, Cumberland Council is set to bring the market to Maryport for the first time this summer.

The council is working in partnership with Taste Cumbria and Maryport Horizons CIC to hold the market in the town and to give more young people an opportunity to take part in this fantastic event.

The ‘Pop-up’ Teenage Market will be held as part of the Taste of the Sea festival which is being held in Maryport on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 August.

Open to anyone aged between 8 and 25 years the Teenage Market offers young people the opportunity to try a business idea and gain experience of making, selling and marketing their own products in a risk-free environment. A gazebo and table are provided and set up for traders on the day, all they have to do is bring themselves and the products they are selling.

Young traders, from across West Cumbria, are already signing up to take part in the market. With a wide range of products on sale on the day including crochet soft toys and bags, macrame keyrings, 3D printed items, sweet treats and Cumbrian made streetwear shoppers are guaranteed not to leave empty handed.

Karen Harwood, whose daughter Rose, will be attending her first Teenage Market at the Maryport event explained why her daughter wanted to take part:

“Rose has always loved making things for family and friends and then had the idea to set up her own business 'Fellcraft'. Rose has been looking for places to sell her homemade crafts, so when she heard about The Teenage Market through school this seemed the perfect opportunity.”

With places still available, it’s not too late to get involved. If you have a passion for business or would like to make money from your hobbies, simply create your performer profile on the Teenage Market website - and then apply to take part in the Teenage Market at the Taste of the Sea festival on either Saturday 9 August, Sunday 10 August or both days. Applications are open until Friday 11 July. The Teenage Market, Maryport, has received funding support from the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

Paul Williamson, from Maryport Horizons wanted to support bringing the Teenage Market to the town. He said:

“We are delighted to be working in partnership with Cumberland Council and Taste Cumbria to bring the Teenage Market to Maryport. At Maryport Horizons we are working to attract and maximise community investment to improve the lives of those living in Maryport and the surrounding areas. The Teenage Market totally complements these aspirations by providing an opportunity for our young people to showcase their talents and develop their business skills, showing that Maryport really is a place where businesses can grow and be supported”.

Councillor Anne Quilter, Executive Member for Vibrant and Healthy Places at Cumberland Council added:

“I am thrilled to see the Teenage Market taking in place in Maryport for the first time and that it is being incorporated into one of our wonderful Taste Cumbria events.  Feedback from the young people who have taken part in previous markets has shown how much it has helped to develop their self-confidence and sense of achievement as well giving them a fun and enjoyable day. I encourage any young person who is thinking about signing up to have a stall at the Maryport Teenage Market to get involved and begin your business journey.”

Taste Cumbria’s Taste of the Sea festival will be held across Maryport harbour and new event space on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 August 2025. Bigger and better than ever, the event includes a producers market, live cookery demonstrations and music plus lots of family friendly activities too.
