Works to revitalise The Market Hall and the Eden Centre in Carlisle are progressing well, with building owners Cumberland Council and new leaseholders Bearmont Group continuing to hold positive discussions.
Bearmont Group took over the lease of the Grade II-listed building in December last year and since then they, alongside the council, have set about putting in place plans to breathe new life into the much-loved city centre site.
A number of works have already been completed successfully by Bearmont on the external facade which is not only making the building more attractive but also safer for shoppers and those who work there. Local contractors have been used wherever possible and the council’s conservation team have worked closely with Bearmont to ensure that the Market Hall’s historical features are retained and enhanced. The works include:
• Renewing original signage
• Restoring metalwork
• Repairing brickwork
• Replacing windows and doors
• Refreshing paintwork
• Replacing damaged roofing
Although this phase of the refurbishment has ended, further works are due to begin soon, namely on creating a new toilet block.
Rob Lloyd, CEO of Bearmont Group, said: “We’re pleased to confirm that works across the Market Hall and Eden Centre continue to move forward in line with the phased regeneration plans. While site activity may appear quieter at present, that reflects the natural rhythm of the programme as we transition between key phases.
“We’re now preparing to commence phase four, which will see the development of new toilet blocks. Phase five will follow shortly after, as part of our ongoing commitment to revitalising the site.”
There are more exciting developments for the Market Hall and Eden Centre around the corner with national retailer B&M is set to open a store in the former Wilkos unit later this month. The 30,000 sq ft space has stood empty after Wilko's departure in 2023 following 24 years in the city.
Talks surrounding an improved communal seating area that would complement and support the fantastic food offering - and attract even more people to eat and shop – also remain active and positive. Listed building consent for this project was approved by the council’s planning committee in February.
Councillor Barbara Cannon, Executive Member for Financial Planning and Assets, said: “The Market Hall and Eden Centre is a landmark building in Carlisle and one of the few covered Victorian markets left in the country, therefore it’s vital that any refurbishments are done sensitively. I’m pleased to see that these works have been done successfully, and the other improvements made there are already bearing fruit.
“We look forward to more positive talks with Bearmont Group and jointly progressing our ambitious plans to improve the Market Hall and restore it to its former glory.”
Mr Lloyd added: "Elsewhere, we’re pleased to share that the B&M fit-out is progressing well and on track for completion ahead of its scheduled opening on 30 May. Additionally, units five and six in the arcade have now been let to local businesses previously based in the market. This move creates space for the upcoming improved communal seating area; an exciting and much-anticipated part of the redevelopment."
