Whitehaven in Bloom Celebrates Silver Gilt Success at National Awards

Whitehaven In Bloom Team

Whitehaven has received a Silver Gilt Award in the Coastal Category at this year’s Britain in Bloom Awards, held in Brighton earlier this year.

Judges were impressed not only by the town’s rich history and its special Coastal Health Priority Habitat, but also by the thriving community spirit that continues to make Whitehaven such a special place.

During their visit, the judges were welcomed at the Beacon Museum, where Cumberland Council teams and volunteers shared updates on projects completed over the past year, as well as the seasonal events and floral displays that bring colour and vibrancy to the town throughout the seasons.

Judges praised the cultural interpretation of Whitehaven’s history, reflected through statues, murals and information boards, and were delighted by the thriving Cartgate Allotments, which at the time of their visit were overflowing with fresh produce. Beck Bottom also drew admiration for its well-tended planting, composting and water collection, while the floral displays at St Nicholas Church were noted for creating a welcoming and colourful atmosphere across the churchyard.

This achievement is the result of a strong collaborative effort involving Cumberland Council’s Parks, Open Spaces and Waste Teams, alongside a wide range of local partners and volunteers. Among those contributing to Whitehaven’s success are Whitehaven Town Council, The Rotary Club, Whitehaven Heritage Action Group, West House, Royal British Legion, Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners, Whitehaven Youth Harbour Project, the Community Payback Scheme, Beckbottom Community Garden Group, Whitehaven’s Tidy Town/Ship Shapers Group, and the newly joined Bransty Community Group.

The tireless commitment of these groups and individuals has been instrumental in ensuring Whitehaven continues to flourish, inspiring pride and community spirit while showcasing the town’s beauty and heritage on the national stage.

Councillor Anne Quilter, Cumberland Council’s Executive Member for Vibrant and Healthy Places, said:

“It’s wonderful to see Whitehaven recognised with a Silver Gilt Award. This achievement reflects the dedication of our volunteers, community groups and council teams who work tirelessly to make Whitehaven a welcoming, vibrant and beautiful place to live and visit. The judges’ praise for history, culture and community spirit is a true testament to what can be achieved when we all work together.”
