Wigton town centre has received a well-deserved refresh following the successful completion of a deep clean carried out by Cumberland Council earlier this month.
The two-week operation, which began on Monday 2 June, formed part of Cumberland Council’s ongoing commitment to creating cleaner and more inviting spaces for residents, visitors, and businesses alike.
Focusing on key routes through the town; King Street from Market Street car park to Union Lane, and High Street from King Street to Croft Court; the works tackled built-up dirt, grime, and chewing gum, restoring the full potential of these busy pedestrian areas.
Using high-powered jet washers, mechanical sweepers, and specialist equipment, the council's team worked section by section with care and precision. And the transformation is complete! Wigton town centre is now brighter, more welcoming, and ready to shine this summer. Come down and see the difference for yourself, it’s the perfect time to rediscover your local high street!
To keep disruption to a minimum, cleaning was carried out in a well-managed sequence with traffic management in place as needed. Extra care was taken near shopfronts to ensure the safety and convenience of pedestrians and businesses, and each cleaned section was thoroughly inspected before the team moved on.
Cumberland Council would like to extend thanks to local residents and businesses for their patience and support throughout the works, and a special thank you to the dedicated cleaning team for their hard work and professionalism in making Wigton sparkle.
Cumberland Councillor Denise Rollo, Executive Member for Sustainable, Resilient and Connected Places, said:
“Wigton looks absolutely fabulous; clean, fresh, and full of pride. Keeping our town centres clean has a real impact not only on how they look, but on how people feel. A tidy, welcoming environment can lift moods, support local business, and bring the community together.
“At Cumberland Council, health and wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do, and maintaining clean public spaces plays a vital role in that. I’d like to thank everyone involved; from the incredible clean-up team to the residents and businesses who supported the work.”
This project reflects Cumberland Council’s pride in supporting the vibrancy, cleanliness, and continued appeal of Wigton’s town centre—ensuring it looks its best not just for summer, but for the future.
