Cumberland Council is proud to celebrate the incredible efforts of our local environmental champions who go above and beyond to keep our communities clean and green.
This year, we’re thrilled to share some exciting news: Education and Enforcement Officer Ellie Rourke has been shortlisted as a Finalist for the Education and Enforcement Excellence Award at the Keep Britain Tidy Network Awards 2026.
The Keep Britain Tidy Network Conference and Awards attract more than 100 decision-makers that help look after England’s streets and green spaces, including local authorities, housing associations and other major landowners.
Ellie’s nomination recognises her outstanding work in the Lake District National Park, particularly tackling the challenges of wild camping during a period of unprecedented demand. Her efforts not only secured convictions but also raised Cumberland’s profile in national media, shining a spotlight on the complex issues our region faces.
A key factor in this nomination was Ellie’s pioneering approach to restorative justice in Ennerdale and Thirlmere. Her ability to think creatively, embrace bold ideas, and deliver a consistent, impactful message demonstrates professional excellence of the highest standard.
Cumberland Councillor Denise Rollo, Executive Member for Sustainable, Resilient and Connected Places, said:
"Ellie’s dedication and innovative approach have made a real difference in protecting our beautiful landscapes. Her work not only addresses immediate challenges but also sets a benchmark for how enforcement and education can go hand in hand. We are incredibly proud to see her achievements recognised nationally."
