Cumberland Council is extending its sincere thanks to The Carlisle Ramblers & Fellwalking Club for their valuable contribution to keeping parts of Carlisle clean and litter‑free as part of the council’s Litter Champions campaign.
The group took on a wide-ranging clean-up across The Swifts, Stonyholme, and The Sheepmount. What began as a routine task grew in scale, but with an impressive 33 volunteers, the team rose to the challenge, collecting a remarkable 40 bags of litter. Cumberland Council commends all those involved for their hard work and for making a visible difference in the community.
The Litter Champions campaign provides local groups, residents, and businesses with practical resources to support clean-up activities, including litter pickers, high‑visibility vests for adults and children, gloves, bags, and safety guidance. The initiative aims not only to address littering but also to inspire long-term behavioural change, encouraging people to take pride in their local environment.
A core element of the campaign is the Litter Champions programme, which helps community groups and businesses organise clean-up events with council support, including waste collection. The campaign also promotes a business adoption model, encouraging local organisations to take responsibility for nearby areas as part of their staff well‑being and corporate social responsibility commitments.
The wider project includes targeted clean-up activities and action days led by community groups, social landlords, and businesses. These efforts will help residents to tidy their homes, backyards, and gardens - reducing clutter and helping to prevent fly‑tipping across Cumberland.
Cumberland Councillor Denise Rollo, Executive Member for Sustainable, Resilient, and Connected Places, said
“We would like to say a huge thank you to The Carlisle Ramblers & Fellwalking Club for all of their efforts. Litter picking goes beyond simply cleaning up the streets; it’s a chance to engage with your neighbours, stay active, and contribute positively to your community. By coming together, we can create cleaner, healthier spaces and foster a sense of pride in our local area. This initiative is about more than just tidying up - it’s about building a community that cares.
“By working together, we promote collaboration, cleanliness, and community well-being. These values are central to Cumberland Council's Plan, where health and well-being are at the heart of everything we do."
