Cumberland Council and Westmorland and Furness Council are highlighting the importance of reliable, high-quality digital connectivity as Cumbria enters the busy summer period.
As the county welcomes residents, businesses and an influx of visitors, strong and dependable digital services are more important than ever. From the Lake District’s remote valleys to busy urban centres, fast, dependable internet and mobile services underpin daily life. Connectivity enables flexible working, supports businesses competing in a global market, and helps visitors navigate and enjoy the county safely.
With nearly 97% of premises now able to access superfast broadband, more than 87% benefiting from gigabit-capable speeds, and more than 99% of properties in Cumbria covered by outdoor 4G from at least one provider, Cumbria continues to lead the way as one of the UK’s strongest counties for rural digital connectivity, making this an ideal time to review your connectivity options.
For Cumbria’s residents, strong digital connectivity is no longer a luxury, it is essential infrastructure.
Peter Thornton, Digital Champion for Westmorland & Furness, said:
“As Cumbria enjoys the summer months, strong connectivity is vital, particularly in rural areas. It helps people stay in touch, access services and enjoy modern life wherever they are.”
Businesses across tourism, agriculture, manufacturing and the creative industries rely heavily on strong digital infrastructure. High-speed connectivity enables online trading, global collaboration and sustainable growth.
Cllr Chris Southward, Cumberland Council’s Digital Champion, added:
“Connectivity plays a vital role in helping our businesses make the most of summer, supporting growth, innovation and jobs across the county. These works are vital to delivering the fast, reliable connectivity our communities depend on, with significant long-term benefits.”
With millions of visitors expected, mobile connectivity is also key to a positive visitor experience, supporting navigation, bookings and real-time information access.
This ongoing investment in broadband and mobile infrastructure remains critical and while upgrades can cause temporary disruption, they are essential to delivering long-term improvements.
Independent music promotion company RockWith’s founder Russ Withey said:
“As a creative business working across Cumbria, reliable connectivity is essential, especially during the busy summer months. We collaborate with artists remotely, support events and share content with audiences worldwide every day. Fast, dependable connectivity helps us make the most of the season while competing globally from a rural location, and continued investment is vital to support growth and opportunity.”
By continuing to invest in digital infrastructure and supporting essential upgrades, Cumbria is building a more resilient, connected and prosperous future, one where residents, businesses and visitors can all benefit from reliable connectivity, whatever the season.
