Cumberland Council has welcomed national recognition for contractors it has worked closely with on major regeneration and community projects across Carlisle and West Cumbria.
Krol Corlett Construction Ltd and Morgan Sindall Construction have both received Bronze awards at the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) National Site Awards, recognising their commitment to being considerate neighbours and delivering high standards across community engagement, environmental management and workforce wellbeing.
The CCS National Site Awards celebrate construction sites that go above and beyond to minimise disruption, support local communities and create a positive experience for residents, businesses and visitors. Awards are presented at Bronze, Silver and Gold level, based on performance against the CCS Code of Considerate Practice.
Carlisle Digital Hub – Krol Corlett Construction Ltd
Krol Corlett Construction Ltd received a Bronze award for its work as lead contractor on the Carlisle Digital Hub, part of the £3.3 million Carlisle Town Deal investment. The project involves the transformation of Carlisle Library, located on the first floor of The Lanes Shopping Centre, into a modern learning and community hub.
The redevelopment will deliver a welcoming, accessible space featuring a children’s zone, social areas, adult learning classrooms, study spaces and a dedicated display area for The Jackson Collection. The works also include major structural improvements, rewiring and infrastructure upgrades to support new technology and future uses.
Workington Innovation Centre – Morgan Sindall Construction
Morgan Sindall Construction also received a Bronze award for its work on the Workington Innovation Centre, which has now been handed over by Cumberland Council to Oxford Innovation Space ahead of a planned opening in summer 2026.
The purpose‑built facility will provide modern office accommodation and flexible workspace for start‑ups and growing businesses, with a focus on digital technologies and advanced manufacturing. The centre complements other Workington Town Deal projects, including the Digital Accelerator Hub at Lakes College, supporting skills, employability and business growth in the town.
Leader of Cumberland Council, Cllr Mark Fryer, said:
“These awards are a real credit to the contractors we are proud to work with across Cumberland. They recognise not just the quality of the finished buildings, but the care taken throughout construction to support local communities, respect the environment and look after the workforce.
“I would also like to thank our project managers, who work closely with contractors on site every day to help projects run smoothly and maintain these high standards. Their collaboration and commitment play a vital role in delivering successful schemes.
“Projects like the Carlisle Digital Hub and the Workington Innovation Centre are about creating long‑term opportunities for Carlisle and Workington, and it is great to see the standards shown on site being recognised at a national level.”
Cumberland Council works closely with contractors and partners to ensure construction projects are delivered responsibly, with consideration for neighbours, businesses and the wider community while helping to achieve long‑term regeneration and economic benefits.
