Cumberland Council is calling on young people to play their part in this year’s Summer Reading Challenge by becoming a Reading Champion.
With the 2026 Summer Reading Challenge, Read to the Beat, launching this summer, Cumberland Libraries are looking for enthusiastic volunteers aged 14–24 to support children in discovering the joy of reading.
Reading Champions play a key role in bringing the challenge to life - welcoming families into libraries, chatting to children about what they’re reading, handing out rewards, and supporting fun, themed activities throughout the holidays.
The opportunity offers young people the chance to gain meaningful experience while making a real difference in their community.
What’s in it for volunteers?
- Build confidence and communication skills
- Gain valuable experience for CVs and job applications
- Support local library activities and events
- Contribute volunteering hours towards Duke of Edinburgh Awards or similar programmes
No previous experience is required, with full training provided ahead of the challenge. All that’s needed is enthusiasm, reliability, and a willingness to get involved.
Cumberland Councillor Anne Quilter, Executive Member for Vibrant and Healthy Places, said:
“The Summer Reading Challenge is one of the highlights of our library calendar, and our Reading Champions are at the heart of its success. This is a fantastic opportunity for young people to build skills, meet new people, and help inspire children across Cumberland to develop a love of reading.”
