Cumberland Council is pleased to update residents on the ongoing improvements at Hammond’s Pond, delivered through the Start with the Park project.
Significant progress is being made across the site, with new tree planting underway and construction of the new skate park advancing well.
In early February, Cumberland Council Chair Andy Semple and Town Deal Board Chair David Wright visited the park to take part in the latest phase of tree planting.
During the visit, Copper Beech trees were planted near the Multi‑Use Games Area. In total, 300 new trees will be introduced across the park, helping to create a greener, healthier, and more visually striking space for everyone to enjoy.
Last year’s public consultation played a key role in shaping this part of the project. Following strong community support, cherry blossom and tulip trees will also be planted throughout Hammond’s Pond, after receiving the highest number of votes in the survey.
In addition to the planting programme, construction of the brand-new skate park is progressing at pace. Recent work includes:
- Stone being built up to form the sub‑structure of the ramps
- Ramp profiles now fully shaped
- Timber framing installed in preparation for the upcoming concrete pour
These major milestones mean the skate park is well on track for its planned Spring opening, when residents will be invited to enjoy the new facility.
Cllr Andy Semple, Chair of Cumberland Council said:
“It’s fantastic to see such real, tangible progress at Hammond’s Pond. The new planting and the development of the skate park are already bringing fresh energy to the site and helping create a park that future generations will be proud of. This project is a great example of how investment in green spaces can strengthen communities and improve quality of life.”
David Wright, Chair of the Carlisle Town Deal Board said:
“Start with the Park is all about putting people, nature and wellbeing at the heart of Carlisle’s future. Seeing the plans taking shape at Hammond’s Pond is incredibly exciting, and it reflects the strong partnership between the community, the Town Deal Board and Cumberland Council. We’re delighted to support a project that will offer lasting benefits for residents and visitors alike.”
The project will deliver the 'Greenway' a connective, multi-modal green travel route connecting the key settlements of St Cuthbert’s Garden Village with Carlisle City Centre and providing a high-quality leisure and recreation facilities. The Carlisle Town Deal will secure investment to support the regeneration of the city, support skills and business development and improve digital and physical connectivity.
The Start with the Park project forms part of the Council’s £100m regeneration programme for Carlisle, supported by UK Government funding through the Future High Streets Fund, Town Deal and Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal initiative. This multi-million-pound investment is focused on transforming the city centre by improving infrastructure, boosting economic growth, and creating a more attractive, accessible environment for residents, businesses, and visitors alike
Cumberland Council looks forward to sharing further updates as Start with the Park continues to transform Hammond’s Pond into a vibrant, welcoming, and environmentally rich destination for the whole community.
