Cumberland Council is set to carry out carriageway resurfacing works on the B5302 at Kelswick House, Abbeytown, helping to improve the condition of the highway and provide safer, smoother journeys for residents, businesses and visitors.

The works form part of Cumberland Council's wider £27.3 million investment in highways for 2026/27, including £2.85 million dedicated to residential and rural roads, supporting improvements across the network.

The scheme is scheduled to begin on Monday 27 July 2026 and is expected to take up to five days to complete, subject to weather and site conditions. The works will be delivered by Cumberland Council's contractor, DSD Construction Limited.

The investment is helping to improve roads, tackle potholes and enhance key infrastructure across Cumberland, including drainage, footways, cycleways and bridges, creating a safer, more resilient and better-connected network for communities.

Karl Melville, Cumberland Council’s Assistant Director for Highways & Transport, said:

"Maintaining and improving our road network is essential for keeping our communities connected and supporting the people who live, work and travel across Cumberland. These resurfacing works at Abbeytown will improve the condition of the road and help provide safer, smoother journeys for everyone who uses the route.

"This scheme is one of many being delivered through our significant investment in highways infrastructure, helping us create a more resilient and reliable network for residents, businesses and visitors."

Access for residents will be limited during working hours of 7.30am to 6.00pm. However, traffic marshals will be on site throughout the works and will endeavour to facilitate access to properties where it is safe to do so.

The resurfacing works will help improve the condition of the carriageway, extending its lifespan and reducing the need for future maintenance.

During the works:

  • Access for emergency service vehicles will be maintained throughout the scheme.
  • Pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will continue to have access through the site.
  • Waste and recycling collections will continue as normal.

Cumberland Council would like to thank residents and road users for their patience and understanding while these essential works are carried out and apologises for any temporary inconvenience caused.

Residents can check live and planned roadworks, closures and traffic updates using one.network, to help plan journeys.
