A Cumberland Council recycling champion has scooped a prestigious award.
Barbara Herridge, part of the council’s hosted waste disposal team was named Local Authority Individual or Team of the Year against 10 other finalists at the 2026 Awards for Excellence in Waste and Recycling. It was in recognition of her exceptional contribution to environmental awareness and sustainability across Cumbria.
The Awards for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management are among the UK’s most prestigious industry accolades, recognising innovation, leadership and outstanding achievement across the waste, recycling, reuse and circular economy sectors for more than 20 years.
Held on Wednesday 13 May 2026 and hosted by comedian Jimmy Carr, this year’s ceremony brought together leading organisations, businesses and local authorities from across the country, all making a significant impact in the waste and recycling sector.
Barbara has played a pivotal role in transforming how residents engage with environmental issues, leading campaigns that have reached thousands of young people, reduced hazardous waste, and strengthened collaboration between local authorities. Her leadership has been central to the success of the award-winning Baa-ttery Campaign, alongside wider initiatives focused on food waste reduction and environmental education.
Recognising the potential of a Cumbria-wide campaign to tackle battery recycling, Barbara acted swiftly, providing guidance, encouragement and financial support to move the project from concept to delivery. Under her leadership, the campaign grew into a truly county-wide initiative, bringing together Cumberland Council and Westmorland & Furness Council in a strong example of effective partnership working.
Beyond the Baa-ttery Campaign, Barbara leads a dedicated team delivering a wide range of environmental initiatives. She is widely respected for fostering collaboration, mentoring colleagues, and ensuring projects deliver lasting value for communities rather than one-off results.
Councillor Denise Rollo, executive member for sustainable, resilient, and connected places, said:
“Barbara’s passion, leadership and commitment to making a difference are truly inspiring. This award is thoroughly deserved and reflects the real impact her work is having across our communities. By bringing people together and championing innovative ideas, she has helped drive lasting change in how we think about and manage waste.”
This national recognition highlights not only Barbara’s individual achievements, but also Cumberland Council’s wider commitment to delivering impactful environmental programmes. Her work continues to support safer waste practices, inspire behavioural change, and encourage communities across Cumbria to play their part in building a more sustainable future.
