New community rail project helps people gain confidence to travel independently

A new community rail project is helping people with disabilities gain the confidence and skills to travel independently by train while promoting some of the outstanding attractions along the Cumbrian Coast Line.

Developed by Community Rail Cumbria, part of Cumberland Council, in partnership with Northern Trains Ltd and three local Day Services groups – West House, Carlisle Day Services, and Allerdale & Copeland Day Opportunities,  the "Ticket to Independence" project has created a series of unique display panels showcasing local walks, cycling routes, heritage sites, nature attractions and trails.

The project received £2,450 in funding from Cumberland Council's Community Panels, with support from the Fells & Solway, Lakes to Sea, Workington Together, Whitehaven & Coastal, and South Cumberland Community Panels. Thanks to this funding, the display panels are now being installed at railway stations across the Cumbrian Coast Line. Accompanying the displays is an attractive printed leaflet which, despite the growing use of digital information, remains an important and accessible resource for many people, particularly those living with disabilities.

More than just a station improvement project, Ticket to Independence has provided valuable opportunities for people who access day services to develop new skills, build self-confidence and increase their independence. Participants were actively involved throughout the project, taking part in research and planning activities, learning about rail safety, understanding timetables, using ticket vending machines, engaging with station staff and conductors, and travelling along the spectacular Cumbrian Coast Line.

Through these experiences, participants have gained the knowledge and confidence needed to travel safely, independently and with greater assurance.

A series of workshops gave participants the opportunity to share their ideas and experiences, helping to shape the design and content of both the display panels and leaflets. The finished materials were produced by local print company Firpress and introduce a new character, Terri the Ticket Inspector, who will feature in future projects along the Cumbrian Coast Line.

The project was officially launched at Cumbria House on 30 July, where the panels and leaflets were unveiled to an audience of more than 40 guests. The displays will be installed at selected stations along the route during August, providing inspiration for residents and visitors alike to explore the area by rail.

Ticket to Independence demonstrates how community rail partnerships can break down barriers to travel, promote accessible and sustainable transport, and empower people to travel with confidence and independence.

Lisa Rumney – West House, said:

“The Wednesday group at Harrington have really enjoyed the collaboration workshops and have put a lot of focus and effort into the Ticket to Independence project.

Independence isn’t a destination—it’s a journey of courage, confidence, and taking the next step forward."

Annamarie Armstrong, Locality Manager Cumberland Council, said:

Day Opportunities are proud to be part of The Ticket to Independence project working in partnership with West House, Northern Trains Ltd and Community Rail Cumbria. It has been empowering for the people we support to build confidence and develop valuable skills.

Throughout the project, individuals have taken great pride in the work they have completed at the stations, knowing that their shared lived experience and contributions have made a real and visible difference to the local communities and visitors of Cumbria.

We are incredibly proud of everything that has been accomplished and grateful for the opportunities this partnership continues to provide.

Jane Murray, Northern Trains Ltd Station Manager, said:

“I am delighted to have been involved in the Ticket to Independence project, an inspiring initiative that promotes active, sustainable, and accessible travel along the stunning Cumbria Coast.

The newly, soon to be installed information panels have been thoughtfully designed to be user-friendly and engaging, highlighting local walking routes, cycling trails, nature attractions, and heritage sites. They provide valuable information that encourages customers and visitors alike to explore and enjoy the unique landscapes and communities of the coastline.

This project is a testament to the power of collaboration, bringing together a dedicated group of individuals and organisations who worked collectively to design and deliver these vibrant and informative panels. The result is a series of high-quality panels that will enhance the customer experience at locations across the Cumbria Coast for years to come.

Congratulations and thanks to everyone who played a part in bringing this fantastic project to life. The panels are a wonderful achievement and a lasting legacy that will help connect people with the rich natural and cultural heritage of the region.”

Warren Birch, Community Rail Partnership Officer, said:

“It was fantastic working with the different organisations, but particularly the people who access the services who are the real stars of the Ticket to Independence project.

“To see their initial ideas develop into the end products was inspiring, as was the positive change in people’s self-esteem and confidence.  We hope these panels will encourage more people to travel by train and discover the towns, villages and attractions along the Cumbrian Coast Line."
