A new Cumberland Tour de France website has been launched to coincide with the year to go until the world’s biggest sporting event comes to Cumbria.
Cumberland Council has launched the website - www.cumberland.gov.uk/TourdeFrance - bringing together the latest news, updates and opportunities to get involved as preparations continue for the Grand Départ in July 2027.
The website will help people stay up to date with plans, discover what the event means for Cumberland and find out how they can be part of the journey.
A dedicated Tour de France e-newsletter has also been launched and anyone wanting updates on the event is encouraged to sign up here.
A Stage One finish in Carlisle and a Stage Two start in Keswick have already been confirmed for the 2027 Tour de France. The men's race will begin in Edinburgh on Friday 2 July 2027, with riders finishing in Carlisle later that day. The following morning, the peloton will depart from Keswick before travelling through the Lake District and Lancashire on its way to Liverpool.
The Tour de France is watched by millions of people around the world every year and attracts between 10 and 12 million spectators along the route. For Cumberland, it presents a huge opportunity to showcase its landscapes, communities and businesses to a global audience. The 2014 Yorkshire Grand Départ generated an estimated £131 million in economic benefits, highlighting the potential impact of hosting the race.
The launch also comes as organisers continue to recruit volunteers for the 2027 Grand Départ of both the Tour de France and Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift. Around 9,000 volunteers, known as ‘JOY Makers', will help welcome spectators, support event operations and play a key role in making the event a success.
Applications are now open across all six stages of the event and will remain open until Tuesday 1 September 2026. Anyone aged 16 and over can apply, with full training provided.
People can find out more about the event, sign up for updates and explore opportunities to get involved through the new Tour de France website.
