Overnight resurfacing works planned for Dalston village

Two highways team members discussing their next job

Cumberland Council will be carrying out essential carriageway resurfacing works on the B5299 through Dalston village.

The works are scheduled to begin on Monday 20 July 2026 and will take place over 35 nights, subject to weather and site conditions.

To ensure the safety of both the workforce and road users, the scheme will be carried out under overnight road closures, with working hours between 6pm and 1am each evening, and the road remaining closed until 3am to allow for site clearance and material curing.

The programme will be delivered in two phases:

  • Phase 1: Caldewhurst to Station Road – 20 July to 7 August

  • Phase 2: The Square to Bridge End Inn – 10 August to 4 September

A signed diversion route will be in place throughout the works. Access for emergency services, pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will be maintained at all times.

Due to the nature of the works, vehicle movements within the closure area will be restricted, and while access may be arranged where possible, residents should expect some delays depending on site activity.

We recently wrote to residents in the local area to provide details of a drop-in session taking place this evening. Unfortunately, due to technical issues with delivery, some households may not receive their letter in advance of the event. We apologise for any inconvenience and are keen to ensure all residents have the opportunity to find out more, speak to the team and ask any questions.

Drop-in session: Monday 29 June

To support residents and businesses, the council will be holding a drop-in session on Monday 29 June, from 6pm to 8pm at the Victory Hall in Dalston, where people can ask questions and find out more about the scheme.

These works form part of Cumberland Council’s commitment to maintaining and improving the highway network, helping to provide safer, smoother journeys for all road users.

Residents with queries or specific access requirements are encouraged to contact the council via the Highways Hotline on 0300 373 3736 or visit the council website: www.cumberland.gov.uk/roads.
