Cumberland Council has completed a series of road safety improvements on Crosthwaite Road in Keswick, helping to make journeys safer and more accessible for pupils, bus users and the wider community.
The scheme was developed following concerns raised by Keswick Town Council and Keswick School about the safety of pupils crossing Crosthwaite Road after getting off school transport services. Surveys identified significant numbers of pupils crossing close to stationary buses, highlighting the need for improved pedestrian facilities.
The completed improvements include a new pedestrian refuge island, upgraded footways and associated parking restrictions designed to improve visibility and reduce the risk of vehicles obstructing key crossing points. Together, these measures provide a safer place to cross the road and improve access between bus stops, the school and nearby destinations.
The scheme has also created a continuous and more accessible walking route, making it easier for people to travel on foot and connect with public transport services. The improvements will particularly benefit pupils travelling to and from school, residents using local bus services and those choosing active travel as part of their daily journeys.
Karl Melville, Cumberland Council’s Assistant Director for Highways & Transport, said: "These improvements are a great example of how we are investing in local infrastructure to make everyday journeys safer and easier for our communities.
"The scheme responds directly to concerns raised locally and provides safer crossing facilities for pupils, bus users and pedestrians, while also supporting walking and public transport.
"By taking a proactive approach to road safety, we can help prevent future problems and create a more accessible and better-connected network for everyone."
The project was funded through LTG funding and supports Cumberland Council's wider commitment to improving road safety, encouraging active travel and enhancing access to public transport across the area
Cumberland Council would like to thank residents, road users, Keswick Town Council and Keswick School for their support while the improvements were developed and delivered
