Spring Clean Success: Over 90 miles of verges cleared in annual litter pick

Verge litter pick

Cumberland Council is sharing an update following the completion of the annual verge litter pick across Carlisle, carried out by its Street Cleaning team last month.

The large‑scale clean‑up is a vital operation to help keep local highways clean, safe and environmentally friendly, while also highlighting the ongoing challenge of litter and waste being discarded along roadsides.

The team focused on key routes identified as litter hotspots across the city, delivering significant results over the course of the operation, including:

  • 94 miles of grass verges litter‑picked
  • 1,500 black bags filled
  • 3.4 tonnes of litter collected
  • 6 car tyres removed
  • 1.1 tonnes of fly‑tipping cleared

As well as improving the appearance of Carlisle’s roadsides, the annual litter pick helps to protect wildlife and preserve the natural beauty of the local environment.

Cumberland Councillor Denise Rollo, Executive Member for Sustainable, Resilient, and Connected Places, said

“Our Street Cleaning team does an outstanding job, and these results speak for themselves. This annual verge litter pick is a huge task, often carried out alongside busy main roads, where staff are working just feet away from fast‑moving traffic.

“The work is done with real dedication, care and pride, sometimes in challenging and dangerous conditions, and we are incredibly grateful to everyone involved for keeping our highways safe and clean.

“While the clean‑up makes a real difference to our environment, it also highlights the scale of the challenge we face with litter and fly‑tipping. We all have a role to play in keeping our communities clean.”

Cumberland Council is thanking everyone involved in making this year’s litter pick a success and is reminding residents and motorists to do their part by disposing of waste responsibly and not littering.
