Businesses in South Cumberland can take advantage of the Welcome Host Gold training day on Tuesday 13 January 2026, running from 9.30am to 4.30pm at the Higgins Suite, Millom Library, Community Hub, Millom, LA18 5AB.
This nationally recognised one‑day programme focuses on the core skills required to deliver excellent service within the hospitality sector. Using interactive learning, group exercises, personal action planning and a wealth of practical tips, the course provides participants with techniques they can apply immediately in their workplace.
Welcome Host Gold explores the full customer journey, from understanding and welcoming visitors to communicating effectively, managing challenging situations and consistently delivering high‑quality service.
On Monday 26 January 2026, the project will host Welcoming All Customers, running from 9.30am to 1.30pm at The Beacon Portal, West Strand, Whitehaven, CA28 7LY.
The full‑day course focuses on the importance of delivering exceptional and inclusive customer service, a central ambition of the Cumbria Coastal Route initiative. Participants will explore the value of meeting diverse customer needs and the positive impact this can have on their business. Through a blend of informative presentations, group activities, practical guidance and individual action planning, attendees will develop the confidence and understanding needed to support every customer effectively.
The course covers a wide range of topics, including models of disability, the benefits of inclusivity, effective communication and the identification and removal of accessibility barriers. It is designed for anyone working directly with customers or managing staff in customer‑facing roles. By the end of the session, participants will be better equipped to anticipate access needs, understand different accessibility requirements, communicate information in ways that reach a broad audience and create consistently positive experiences for all visitors.
These workshops are open to any businesses operating within the visitor economy in Cumberland’s coastal areas and is funded through Cumberland Council by the UK Government Shared Prosperity Fund with support from Cumbria Tourism.
Councillor Anne Quilter, Cumberland Council’s Executive Member for Vibrant and Healthy Places, said:
“These training sessions offer practical support for our coastal businesses and the people who work in them. Good customer service makes a real difference to visitors and local residents alike, and these courses give staff the tools to feel more confident in their roles. We’re pleased to be able to provide this free training as part of the Cumbria Coastal Route project and hope many businesses will take up the opportunity.”
Together, these training opportunities support the wider aims of the Cumbria Coastal Route project: strengthening the region’s visitor offer, empowering local businesses and ensuring every visitor receives a warm and memorable welcome.
