Cumberland Council will shortly begin the second and final phase of embankment repair works at Bell Lonning, Sebergham from Monday 23 February 2026, to improve the long‑term stability and environmental resilience of the riverbank.
The road at Bell Lonning was first closed after being severely damaged during Storm Desmond, with further erosion occurring in January 2024. To keep the route safe, temporary stabilisation works were caried out in May 2024.
This was followed by the successful completion of Phase 1 permanent repairs in summer 2025, delivered by Metcalfe Plant Hire Ltd.
The contractor will now return to complete Phase 2: Willow Spiling, a traditional, nature‑based technique for stabilising riverbanks and preventing erosion. Willow Spiling uses freshly cut, living willow stakes and rods woven together to create a strong, flexible barrier that reinforces the riverbank. As the willow takes root, it forms a highly effective, long‑term and sustainable defence against erosion.
Programme of works:
- Start date: Monday 23 February 2026
- Duration: Approximately one week
- Method: Willow spiling (natural riverbank reinforcement)
To allow the works to be completed safely, a road closure will be in place from 8am to 5pm each day. Advance signage has been installed to notify road users of the temporary restrictions.
Access arrangements:
- Access for pedestrians, cyclists, and emergency services will be maintained throughout the works.
- Road users are advised to plan ahead and follow on‑site signage.
